It also outlines why antibiotics are sometimes needed to ensure animal health and their welfare, for the efficient production of safe food and to provide protection against diseases that can transfer from animals to people. There are many instances in animal health where antibiotics remain essential. Rather than simply restricting their use, a more sustainable way to tackle antibiotic resistance is to ensure they are used responsibly, when they are needed, in the amount needed and under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Las normas de la OIE, contenidas en los Códigos Sanitarios para los Animales Terrestres y Acuáticos, son medidas utilizadas por las autoridades veterinarias/competentes de los países importadores y exportadores a los efectos de prevenir la transferencia de agentes patógenos para los animales o los humanos y evitar barreras comerciales sanitarias injustificadas. Estas normas se utilizan también para la vigilancia y el control de las enfermedades animales, incluyendo las zoonosis.
